What We Look for When Hiring Offshore Accounting Professionals

January 2025 | 7 min read | Aussure BPO Team

Wondering if you'd be a good fit for Aussure BPO? Here's an honest look at what we value in candidates—and it's probably not exactly what you expect.

Beyond the CV

Yes, we look at qualifications and experience. But a strong CV is just the starting point. We've learned that the best offshore professionals share certain qualities that don't always show up on paper.

We hire for potential and attitude, then develop technical skills. The reverse rarely works.

Technical Foundation

We do need a baseline of technical capability:

  • Accounting Fundamentals Understanding of double-entry bookkeeping, financial statements, and basic accounting principles. You don't need to know Australian specifics—we'll teach those.
  • Computer Literacy Comfort with technology, ability to learn new software, basic Excel skills. We use cloud tools extensively.
  • English Proficiency Strong written and verbal English. You'll communicate directly with Australian clients, so clarity matters.

Qualities We Value Most

Beyond technical skills, we look for:

  • Learning Orientation Genuine curiosity and willingness to learn new things. Australian accounting has a learning curve—we need people who embrace that, not resist it.
  • Reliability Consistent delivery on commitments. When you say you'll do something, you do it. This matters more than occasional brilliance.
  • Attention to Detail Accounting requires precision. Small errors compound into big problems. We look for people who naturally check their work.
  • Communication Skills Ability to explain things clearly, ask good questions, and keep people informed. Silent workers struggle in offshore roles.
  • Initiative Willingness to take ownership, suggest improvements, and solve problems without waiting to be told exactly what to do.

What We DON'T Require

Some things you might assume we need but actually don't:

  • Prior experience with Australian accounting—we provide comprehensive training
  • Specific certifications—valuable but not essential
  • Years of experience—talented junior candidates are welcome
  • Prior BPO or offshore experience—this can be your first offshore role
  • Perfect English—clear communication matters more than native-level fluency

Red Flags We Watch For

Being transparent, here's what concerns us in candidates:

  • Blame Shifting When things go wrong, we need people who take ownership rather than point fingers.
  • Resistance to Feedback Everyone receives feedback here. Candidates who seem defensive about improvement areas concern us.
  • Job Hopping Without Growth Frequent moves are fine if there's progression. Lateral moves every few months suggest issues.
  • Overselling We prefer honest assessment of skills over inflated claims. Gaps are fine—dishonesty isn't.

Our Interview Process

Here's what to expect:

  • Initial Screening A conversation about your background, interests, and what you're looking for. We want to understand you, not just your CV.
  • Technical Assessment A practical exercise testing accounting fundamentals and attention to detail. Not tricky—just realistic.
  • Team Interview Meeting with team members to assess fit and give you a chance to ask questions about the role.
  • Final Discussion Covering expectations, compensation, and any remaining questions before making decisions.

A Good Fit Goes Both Ways

We want candidates to evaluate us too. During the process, ask about:

  • How we support new team members
  • What career progression looks like
  • How we handle busy periods
  • What current team members like and dislike
  • Anything else that matters to you

The best working relationships start with honest conversations. We'd rather you join knowing exactly what to expect.
